Hey! If you are following then thanks for following, if you are perusing then thanks for perusing. The blog is pretty much on hiatus at the moment. I was living in Japan for a number of years and almost in spite of myself I ended up learning a lot of Japanese. I also love comics, so I was delighted to discover that a somewhat unintentional consequence of learning Japanese that was that I could actually start to read manga in Japanese, and that gave me a huge motivational boost to keep studying. I started this blog as part of that; I was buying loads of used manga and this was a way to chart some kind of progress (perhaps).

However, last summer I left Japan and moved to the Netherlands. For me, this tumblr was connected to the actual physical manga I was buying in Japan. Everything I posted was scanned by me and ‘translated’ by me, and I didn’t want to just reblog things or use scans (for no good reason really, it’s not like I’m a particularly principled person, it just wasn’t in the spirit of the blog). So, since dirt-cheap used Japanese manga isn’t exactly growing on trees over here, since I don’t own a scanner, and since I’m insanely busy all the time, I’m basically mothballing this place for now.

That said, I’m hopefully heading back to Japan at some point in the future and who knows, maybe I’ll be able to start up posting again. I mean I sold most of my manga when I left, but I put a whole bunch in storage that I will be back for one day! Plus I think I do have a few more pages that I scanned and never posted hanging around my hard drive somewhere. Or maybe I’ll just start using scans from the net…

Anyway, thanks for checking the blog out and I hope I’ll be able to post again sooner rather than later.

Anonymous asked: Hello, we are two weird kids (adults) that have traumatized ourselves since our childhood with artwork and philosophical stories such as Akira, Berserk, Dragon Head, Uzumaki etc. But you see, we seem to have this certain nostalgic feel for Akira and have been inspired by it, we can relate to the story. Well now we are looking into INRI... Yes, we really would love to know more of how in the world we can obtain such... Thanks man, hope you can help us out a bit.

    Answer:

Hey Anon, sorry for being away for so long. I’d like to help out, but I’m not sure what I can do. Also, your anonymity makes it hard to do pretty much anything! Drop me another line with an email address if you haven’t found it yourself yet.

Billy Bat by Urasawa Naoki, still on hiatus in Morning. Sigh.

Another poor sucker’s life is ruined by taking the salesman’s advice in Fujiko Fujio A’s Warau Salesman. This manga is just so horrible. I love it.

I keep looking for Yokoyama Yuichi books in bookshops and never find any. So I got sick of looking and just ordered Travel from Amazon. The story of the entire book: three men take a train. It is AMAZING.

I picked up the 2nd paperback of Kaneko Atsushi’s Wet Moon last month (I think it was last month…) and couldn’t resist picking up the last issue of Comic Beam, in which it is serialised, too. I mean, just look at that cover! And the real thing isn’t tan - it’s gold! Gorgeous!

And here’s a whole page from Hyouge Mono by Yamada Yoshihiro where a fight is decided by a fart. I’m sure you know that this is historically accurate.
